To Block or Not to Block: The Controversy of Ad Blockers



Among numerous debatable topics on the internet, ad blocker have been a subject of discussion for long a time. The whole community is divided in this matter. Some people get very defensive whereas some others are just okay with either of opinion. So, Should I or shouldn’t I use ad blockers while browsing? what's being harmed and who? Who is morally wrong and who is practically right? 

 What is ad blocker?

Ad blocker is the program that blocks ads in pages you are visiting or app you are using. There are some separate application that blocks annoying ads. You can use plugins or extensions on your browsers as well. These  blocks ads showing to visitors  in websites. Which  reduces revenue coming from ad programs like adsense,admob etc. But ad blockers doesn't filter whitelisted  ads.

Positive Aspects:

If you are using high price data pack and data saving is your concern then you should definitely use it. Blocking ads saves your data. You are safe from Spam ads and links. You will no longer be victim of continuous redirected to spam links. Adblocker also prevent tracking you. Using it means You are not being tracked now. Privacy does matter to you right?

Since unnecessary scripts are not required to execute it makes faster loading. Also there will be no flicker, no popup, no sound, no disturbance. Which lets you focus in main business.

Negative Aspects:

Blocking ads means blocking their earning. You are not helping creators. Just letting ads show up could have encouraged and motivated them to create more qualitative contents. You are consuming their content free of cost. Not appreciating their hard work is morally wrong right?

If you are using ad blocker you might not get enjoy the full feature. You will have Limited access or might not get access at all. Ad blocker itself might track your browsing activity. In addition, big advertising houses pay a lot to list their ads as allowed whitelists. So effectiveness and reliability of ad blocker  itself is questionable.



Should I use ad blockers then? If you ask me, I would say -yes! There is a famous quote by Voltaire.

"Think for yourself and let others enjoy the privilege of doing so too"

You’ll be on the safer side, and in time, content creators will find alternative ways to continue their work. After all, survival and existence are the rewards for adapting to a dynamic environment. If you still feel bad for them, you can always support and donate directly through various platforms. It’s important to remember that the digital world is constantly evolving, and both creators and consumers have the power to shape it. There are always ways to find a balance between supporting creators and protecting your own privacy. Ultimately, it’s about making conscious choices that align with your values. As long as we all respect each other’s needs and perspectives, we can continue to thrive in this interconnected space.
