There are about 3.7K species of
flowering plants on Earth. Showy flowers, nectar, and pleasant scents are
traits of phanerogams, which they use to attract pollinators. Red, yellow, and
blue are vibrant colors that pollinators are most attracted to. In some
species, the color of the flower changes over time, such as from pink to blue
or red to pale dark. This color change usually signals to insects that the
flower has aged and is past its pollination stage, prompting them to move on.
This fascinating adaptation helps ensure that pollinators focus on flowers that
are still in their prime for pollination. Different species have evolved unique
strategies to attract specific types of pollinators, ensuring effective
cross-pollination.
White-colored flowers are relatively less attractive and
more common. However, they have managed to thrive and dominate the population.
Most wind-pollinated major crops have white or dark flowers. These plants don’t
invest resources in attracting pollinators with large petals, nectar, or
scents. Interestingly, night visitors like moths prefer white and night-opening
flowers. This adaptation allows them to attract nocturnal pollinators
efficiently while conserving energy.
There is no blue color pigment in plants, so they don’t have
a direct way of making blue. This is why blue flowers are among the rarest
flowers. Birds and insects can widely detect blue due to its specific
wavelength. Relatively few blue-colored flowers don’t deter pollinators. In
fact, blue flowers are often the most rewarding flowers. Their rarity and
vibrancy make them highly sought after by pollinators, ensuring effective
pollination.
Although beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, content
does make a difference. Being common is not necessarily a huge transgression,
but filling oneself with artificiality and imitating the real thing truly is.
Be a flower of any kind, and don't let others decide how you should look or
behave. Bloom for the sake of your own growth and happiness. Embrace your
uniqueness and let your true colors shine. Authenticity is what attracts the
right people and opportunities into your life. The world is full of imitation,
but it is the genuine that leaves a lasting impact. Don’t be afraid to stand
out and show the world who you truly are.
